Bringing households together

Amakhaya Amabini brings together families who have never met to stand in solidarity through this crisis.

Meaning “2 homes”, we believe that it takes two to make the world a better place. One small action at a time.

How do we ensure vulnerable families have enough to live on during this difficult lockdown time without compromising social distancing and human dignity?

Amakhaya Amabini pairs households in an effort to ensure that all South Africans have enough to live on during lockdown. If you’re able to commit to supporting a household for 8 weeks, then this is for you!

Join our movement. Connect with another family and make a difference!

HOW IT WORKS

Blue households

For households who can spare a little to support a family in need.

We match you with a vulnerable household. You send grocery vouchers, electricity and/or airtime to your foster family, using just a cellphone number.  Learn more

Community champions

For NPO’s and champions on the ground in their communities.

You identify those most in need in your community and put suitable families forward. We call them “Green households”.

Green households

For households struggling in this difficult time.

“We are not all in the same boat. We are all in the same storm. Some are on super-yachts. Some have just the one oar.”

Damian Barr, April 2020

“I love the idea behind this initiative! It has been a wonderful experience connecting with another household. I find myself looking forward to our weekly chats and know that the extra bit that I give makes a difference.”

Sharleen, Cape Town

“This will be the third week we are supporting our family. It is going really well and we think the scheme is great. We’ve also shared this around and got a number of other people set up with the system.”

Matthew, London

“I love this idea; I think it could be a permanent way we could share and support into the future. Please sign up and give it a try.”

Ellinor, Johannesburg
